Rose W. Carlson, 98, of Naples, Fla., passed away peacefully on Friday, May 3, 2013, in Overland Park, Kan., with her daughters by her side. She was born on Jan. 9, 1915, in Waterloo, to Harry E. and Julia F. Webster. She graduated from East High School in 1933.

Her career started out in the secretarial field. She was a secretary for Cutler Hardware, to the President of National Bank in Waterloo in 1936, for James C. Graham, Attorney and Leo M. Mak Investment Firm. She later worked for Attorney James G. Armstrong, who was elected to the Iowa State Legislature in 1949. Rose moved to Des Moines to be Secretary to the Chief Clerk of the House of Representatives. She later worked at the Rural Electrification Agency in Sedalia, Mo., and as the Deputy Clerk of Probate Court in St. Joseph, Mo. In 1964 after moving back to Waterloo, she went to work for Iowa Securities Company. She passed the Certified Professional Secretary exam in 1966 and was promoted to Assistant Secretary, their first female officer. ISC was purchased by Banco Mortgage Co. and she moved to Minneapolis. She retired as Assistant Vice President in 1980.

Rose had a lovely soprano voice and through grade school, high school and on in her life sang solos in operettas, choruses, quartets, choirs and weddings. She was very active in Sweet Adelines for many years in St. Joseph, Mo., and Waterloo. Rose sang in the choir at The United Church of Christ in Naples for many years.

After moving to Edina, Minn., she and Owen enjoyed entertaining and cruising on the St. Croix River prior to retiring in Naples, Fla., in 1984.

She is survived by two children, Linda J. (David) Dillon, Overland Park, Kan., and Marilyn Rose (Darrell) Trubey, Kansas City, Kan.; a stepson, Christopher O. (Lynda) Carlson, Bloomington, Minn.; four grandchildren: Julie M. Shelley, Cynthia Rose (Gary) Sellars, Steven LaRue Shelley, and Joshua B. Updike; step-grandson, Nathan Carlson; four great-grandchildren: Valentina and Siena Iusco, Morgan and Makenzie Rose Sellars; and one sister, Grace Stegmann.

She was preceded in death by her husband, W. Owen Carlson in 2002 and her son, Larry Webster Shelley in 2012.

A memorial service will be held in Naples, Fla., at the United Church of Christ on Sunday, May 26, 2013 at 2 p.m.
