WATERLOO - David James Berry, 46, of Dubuque, formerly of Waterloo, died Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2006, at home.

He was born Sept. 27, 1959, in Council Bluffs, son of James L. and Mary Gene Floersch Berry. He married Sandra D. White Jan. 8, 1982, in Waterloo.

He graduated from Columbus High School in 1978 where he was an all-American football player and the only player ever to have his number retired by the school. He earned his bachelor's degree from Notre Dame in 1982 before going to Phoenix to earn his master's in social work from Arizona State. From there, he moved to Aurora, Colo., where he worked as a psychotherapist for 13 years at Aurora Mental Health Center.

Mr. Berry currently was employed with the Department of Correctional Services as a clinical services manager in Dubuque.

Survived by his wife, Sandra D. Berry, D.D.S. of Dubuque; two sons, Brendan D. and Cody J., both at home; his father, James L. (Teri) Berry of Waterloo; two brothers, Michael H. (Megan) of Queen Creek, Ariz., and Jeffrey W. (Sylvia) of Chandler, Ariz.; a sister, Kelly G. VanWyk of Monroe; his mother-in-law, Janice D. (Gordon) Sloth of Dike; a brother-in-law, Jay A. (Lori) White of Elgin; two sisters-in-law, Cindy L. White of Waterloo and Shelley J. (Reggie) Hovenga of Cedar Falls; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by his mother, Mary Gene Berry; his father-in-law, Robin D. "Dale" White; and a nephew, Keith J. Berry.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Edward Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at St. Edward Catholic Church, where there will be a 7 p.m. vigil service. Visitation also for an hour before services Monday at the church. Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to Columbus High School or Wahlert High School.
