WATERLOO — Richard A. White, 78, of Waterloo, died Saturday, May 4, 2013, at Ravenwood Nursing & Rehabilitation Center from complications of Parkinson’s disease.

He was born Sept. 3, 1934, in Waterloo, son of Gale and Hattie White. He married Judith Harrington in Waterloo; they later divorced.

Mr. White graduated from Waterloo West High School in 1952 and attended Bemidji State College, Bemidji, Minn. He developed several products for bowlers, operated several sales and businesses marketing those products, and retired as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service.

He served in the U.S. Army in the mid-1950s with posts in Turkey and the Middle East.

Survived by a brother, Fred (Ruth) of Waterloo; a sister-in-law, Judith White; two nieces, LuAnn (Barry Russell) White and Melissa (Michael Remucal) White; a nephew, Justin White; a great-niece, Carinna Williams; and two great-nephews, Augustus Williams and Nicholas Remucal.

Preceded in death by a brother, John White; and a niece, Sue Ellen White.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday at Memorial Chapel, Memorial Park Cemetery, with flag presentation by the Iowa Army National Guard, with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be for an hour before services Friday at the chapel. Locke Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Northeast Iowa Food Bank, Salvation Army or Goodwill.

Following his retirement, he continued to design products and write songs. He had a great love of music, sports, gardening and visiting with friends and relatives. He was also known as “Dick” and “Smoke.”
