WATERLOO — Earl John Langenwalter, 84, of Waterloo, died Wednesday, May 1, 2013, at Covenant Medical Center.

He was born Jan. 15, 1929, in Fonda, son of John S. and Emma Salome Bress Langenwalter. He married Lois Ann Reding on May 5, 1951, in San Diego.

Mr. Langenwalter graduated from Newell Consolidated High School, then attended the University of Iowa. He was employed with the U.S. Postal Service as a carrier and with the Internal Revenue Service as a manager in collections, retiring in 1984. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, where he served with the Fleet Marines in Korea, during the Korean War.

Survived by: his wife; four sons: Mark (Elaine) of Lake City, Minn., Steve (Michelle) of Cedar Falls, Christian (Carolyn) of Indianola and John of Milo; two daughters, Julie (Samuel) Smestad of Roanoke, Texas, and Lucy (Gary) Duncan of Waterloo; 13 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Edward Catholic Church, Waterloo, with private family burial on Wednesday at Fort. Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis. Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, and for an hour before services Tuesday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument, 1 Arizona Memorial Place, Honolulu, Hawaii 96818, Attn.: Superintendent with checks made to National Park Service.

Earl was inspired to join the Navy because his brother was killed in action on the USS Arizona on Dec. 7, 1941.
