INDEPENDENCE — LaVerne D. Sawyer Sr., 68, of Independence, died Tuesday July 30, 2002, at Peoples Memorial Hospital, Independence, of a heart attack.

He was born Sept. 21, 1933, in Waterloo, son of Howard and Tippie Ashcraft Sawyer. He married Carole Ellin Dec. 3, 1970, in Evansdale.

Mr. Sawyer worked at Titus Manufacturing, Ellis Hotel, in trucking and as a farmer.

Survived by his wife; two sons, Dallas of Waterloo and Howard of Anamosa; two daughters, Norma (Richard) Sims and Tina Sawyer, both of Waterloo; eight grandchildren; a great-grandson; a brother, Walter of Ham Lake, Minn.; and a sister, Opal Gillett of Harrison, Ark.

Preceded in death by two brothers; and five sisters.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Locke Funeral Home, Waterloo, with burial in Sawyer Cemetery, rural La Porte City. Friends may call for an hour before services Saturday at the funeral home.
