Shelby Joseph Hagberg, 68, of Waterloo, died Saturday June 13, 2009 at Covenant Medical Center due to complications of Antitrypson Deficiency.

He was born September 11, 1940 in St. Louis, MO the son of Kenneth and Lillian Rose Wlodarek Hagberg. He married Mary Teresa Roark on June 16, 1962 in Cedar Falls; she preceded him in death on January 6, 1999. He married Joyce "Kathi" Billington on June 13, 2000 in Waterloo.

He worked as a boiler operator for UNI Power Plant for 20 years. He served in the U.S. Navy during Vietnam receiving the rank MM1 & C. He received a National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal (6 Stars), Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device, Armed Forced Expeditionary Medal, Good Conduct Medal and Meritorious Unit Commendation Medal. He was a member of the Black Hawk R/C.

Survived by his wife, Joyce "Kathi" Hagberg of Waterloo; two sons, Robert Johnston, Jr. of Waterloo, Scott (Danielle) Hagberg of Waterloo; three daughters: Tina (Steven) Carlson of Las Vegas, NV, Melissa (Eric) Kramer of Waverly, Tiona Johnston of Waterloo; thirteen grandchildren, Charles, Jessica, Alexandria, Jarrett, Tabetha, Steven, Slade, Mitchell, Kaylea, Brooklyn, Shane, Devin and Zachary; one brother, Merle (Karen) Hagberg of Prescott, AZ and one sister, Mary Hagberg of Prescott, AZ.

Preceded in death by his parents; his first wife and twin sisters Sharon and Karen Hagberg.

Services: will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 18, 2009 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (3006 Pleasant Dr.) in Cedar Falls with burial in the Garden of Memories Cemetery. Military Rites will be conducted by the Guy W. Iversen Amvet Post #49 of Cedar Falls. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at the Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel on Kimball.

Memorials may be directed to the family.
