WATERLOO — Francis “Bob” Potter, 89, of Waterloo, died Friday, May 3, 2013, at Covenant Medical Center ER from a heart attack.

He was born Oct. 14, 1923, in Independence, son of Darrell Marion and Marie Hallinan Potter. He married Patsy Sommars on Sept. 10, 1949, in Waterloo.

He was a 1942 graduate of St. John’s School, Independence, and then went on to graduate from Elgin Watchmaking School. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. Mr. Potter was employed in the office of Rath Packing Company and then was employed with John Deere for 13 years.

Survived by his wife; two sons, Craig (Louise) of Waterloo and Pastor Dwayne (Diane) of Washburn; two daughters, Lynnette Sturtz of Coralville and Angela (David) Roberts of Iowa City; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a sister, Julia (Dick) Lown of Waterloo; a brother-in-law, Larry (Ella) Sommars of Downey, Calif; and a sister-in-law, Sharon Rice of Hesperia, Calif.

Preceded in death by a sister, Shirley Baker.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Edward Catholic Church, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the Waterloo AMVETS Post 19 and Evansdale AMVETS Post 31. Visitation for an hour before services Wednesday at the church, where there will be a 9:30 a.m. rosary. Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway is assisting the family.
