Florence was born March 13, 1915, in Emmet Township, Iowa, the daughter of William and Martha (Johnson) O'Brien. She received her education at Emmet Consolidated and Estherville, Iowa, schools. She began her teaching career in a one room schoolhouse in Ellsworth Township in 1936. During that time she met Donald H. Nutting. They were married at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Estherville on June 13, 1937.

The couple initially moved to Pella, Iowa and since 1942, they made their home in Cedar Falls. Mr. Nutting taught at the high school while Mrs. Nutting managed a growing family of three daughters. The Nutting family spent three years in Kaiserslautern, Germany, where the couple taught in the American Army Dependents School and traveled extensively throughout Europe. Returning to Cedar Falls in 1959, Mrs. Nutting taught second grade for a brief time in North Cedar and St. Patrick's School, and then for almost 13 years, in the Janesville Consolidated Schools, retiring in January of 1978.

Florence enjoyed travel, reading, gardening, a good bridge foursome and visits from friends and family. She spent years in loving care of her ailing husband who died on January 25, 1990.

She is survived by her daughters, Barbara (Jack) Locke of Burbank, CA, Margaret (Gordon) Walters of Waverly, and Nancy (Harry) Cohen of Minneapolis, MN; eight grandchildren and their spouses; fourteen great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and many nieces and nephews and their families.

Florence died Tuesday, September 27, 2005, at the Western Home Communities-Martin Center.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sisters, Alice Heywood and Agnes Hageman; and brothers, Francis who died in infancy and Howard.
