WATERLOO - Arthur A. Schmitz, 79, of Ozark Acres, Ark., formerly of Waterloo, died Wednesday, Nov. 13, 1886, in Cedar Rapids after a long illness.

He was born Nov. 10, 1917, in Eagle Center. He married Florence Watters Nov. 16, 1940, in Waterloo.

A World War II veteran of the U. S. Army, Mr. Schmitz was a glazer from 1954 to 1977 with Allied Glass, and was district fire chief and commissioner in Ozark Acres.

Survived by his wife; three daughters: Sally Schmitz and Karen Jansen, both of Cedar Rapids, and Phyllis Koch of Newhall; three sons: Jerry of Sedona, Ariz., Dennis of Cedar Rapids and Steve of Medford, Minn.; 14 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; a great-grandchild; three step-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Henrietta Burkart of Mendora, Ill.

Preceded in death by six sisters and three brothers.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday at St. Jude's Catholic Church, with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery, both in Cedar Rapids. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Turner Chapel West, Cedar Rapids, with a 7 p.m. wake service.

A memorial fund has been established for Hospice of Mercy.
