Harlan Standley

Harlan was born on March 3, 1910, in Rome, Iowa, the son of George W. and Fairie E. (Harlan) Standley. He was raised on the family farm near Stockport, Iowa, and graduated from Stockport High School in 1928. He completed Iowa Success Business College in Ottumwa, Iowa.

On July 3, 1938, he was united in marriage to Margery Johnston in Ottumwa, Iowa. He served with the U.S. Army from 1943-1945, where he served as a meat inspector while stationed in Detroit, Michigan. He was employed by the Federal Government for over 40 years working for the Army Corps of Engineers in St. Louis, Missouri, the Department of Veterans Affairs in Hot Springs, South Dakota, and for the USDA as a meat inspector. As a meat inspector he was first stationed at Rath Packing Co. in Waterloo, and then transferred to Corn Blossom Foods in Independence, Iowa. He retired in 1974. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Black Hawk Lodge #65 A.F. & A.M., Order of Eastern Star Chapter 78 and the El Kahir Shrine.

Harlan is survived by his wife, Margery of Cedar Falls; daughter, Shelley Bridge (Dennis Brachfeld) of Denver, Colorado; grandson, Alex Brachfeld of Denver, Colorado; nephew, Bill (Jean) Orr of Minneapolis, Minnesota; and extended family, Rita and Joe Galloway of Dike, Iowa.

Harlan died on Thursday, February 24, 2005, at the Western Home Communities Martin Center in Cedar Falls.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Berdena Orr.
