MRS. P. J. MARTIN, WIDOW OF MAYOR IN 1901-05, DIES.

Death occurs in Chicago; Funeral to Be Here, Probably Sunday.

Mrs. Jessie L. Martin, widow of Philo J. Martin, former mayor of Waterloo and past grand master of Iowa Masons, died Thursday night in Chicago at the home of her daughter, Miss Blanche Martin, it was learned here by friends, Mr. and Mrs. John W. Miller, 717 Franklin Street. She was 78 years old.

She was the oldest member of the Past Matron's club. Waterloo chapter, No. 128, of the Eastern Star; a past matron of Waterloo chapter, and was a past grand Martha of the Order of the Eastern Star of Iowa.

Before leaving the city to live with her daughter in Chicago, her home was at Western Avenue and Fifth Street.

The body is to arrive here at O'Keefe & Towne Funeral Home Friday evening. Services have been tentatively set for Sunday afternoon. Additional arrangements will be made with the arrival of Miss Martin here Friday evening. Committal services will be conducted by the Past Matrons club at the grave, Mrs. Frank Sherwood, secretary of Waterloo chapter, said.

Jessie L. Ayres was born Sept. 14, 1862, at New Providence, la., and in 1884 was married to Philo J. Martin at Eldora, la.

Her husband, a thirty-second degree Mason died here Feb. 16, 1919. He was a real estate man. Martin was twice elected mayor of Waterloo, holding office from 1901 to 1905, serving at the same time as police judge.

Surviving in addition to Miss Blanche Martin are two other daughters, Gladys (Mrs. C. A.) Hemsworth, Lincoln, Neb., sister-in- law of Dr. L. C. Hemsworth, 415 Columbia Circle, and Dorothy, whose husband is assistant to the chief of the federal bureau of investigation in the Panama Canal Zone. She and her husband expected to begin a four months vacation in the United States Oct. 1. Miss Martin and Mrs. C, A. Hemsworth will arrive here, Friday night and will stay in the home of Dr. and Mrs. L. C. Hemsworth.
