I.P.S. MAN DIES AT SWITCHBOARD IN FAMILIAR TASK

Walter Haynes, Superintendent of Distribution for Utility, Electricuted

Walter Haynes, 62, of 302 Denver Street, district superintendent of power distribution at the Iowa Public Service company, was electicuted about 5:50 p.m. Friday while testing a switchboard at the company plant at Utica and Lafayette Streets.

Workmen discovered Haynes about 6:02 p.m. The fire department rescue squad was called and worked over the body with an inhalator for 15 minutes, but it was apparent that he had died instantly.

Coroner Sidney D. Smith said that Haynes had apparently failed to pull out a plug switch controlling four 110-volt and 440-volt circuits.

He had performed the task thousands of times in his 31 years of employment by the company, officials said.

Haynes was born Dec. 20, 1878, in Elgin, Iowa, the son of Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Haynes. He was graduated from the Audobon, Iowa, high school. On July 3, 1913, he married Miss Maude Hill in Waterloo. Coming to Waterloo 37 years ago from Des Moines, he was employed for six years by the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company. Then he became associated with Iowa Public Service Company.

Haynes was a member of First Methodist Church. He was active in Masonic orders. Waterloo Lodge, 105, A.F.& A.M.; Tabernacle 52, Royal Arch Masons; Crescent Council No. 16, Royal and Select Masters; Ascalon Comandary 25, Knights Templar, and El Kahir Temple, Cedar Rapids. An amateur magician, Haynes was well known for his tricks of slight of hand.

Surviving are the widow, 305 Denver Street; two sisters, Mrs. F. C. Van Pelt and Mrs. L.C. Scott, both of San Diego, Cal.; one daughter, Mrs. Gertrude Kendall, Glendale, Cal., and two grandchildren.

Funeral has been set tentatively for 2 p.m. Tuesday in Kearns Garden Chapel, pending arrival of a daughter, Mrs. J. Lane Kendall of Glendale, Cal, Mrs. Earl Grant, a sister of Mrs. Haynes, and J. H. Hill, father of Mrs. Haynes, both of Oil City, Pa. Rev. O. M. Yaggy, pastor of First Evangelical Church, Cedar Falls, will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
