[Waterloo Courier, Thursday, April 4, 2013]

WATERLOO — Mildred, beloved and devoted wife and mother, broke free from her earthly bond and departed this world on March 31, 2013, to join her husband Harland Keith Cook on their final Heavenly bound flight through crystal azure skies. Harland preceded her in Heavenly flight on July 21, 1992.

Mildred was born Oct. 28, 1921, to Charles and Bertha Heidemann Bartling in Denver, Iowa. She joined her dashing former Army Air Corps pilot Harland in everlasting matrimony on Sept. 3, 1949. Together, they raised three children and are survived by them: Jacki Cook-Haxby (David Haxby) of Eden Prairie, Minn., Richard Cook of Waterloo and Donn Cook of Hopkins, Minn.

Mildred is also survived by her granddaughters, Jennifer Orton (Craig) and Abby Johnstone (Chris), along with their children, Jenna, Olivia and William. Also surviving are Mildred’s sister Marie Chaney and many nieces and nephews.

Mildred held several positions throughout her lifetime, including cook and manager of the Waterloo Grill where she met her husband Harland, and as a volunteer for local hospitals, church and civic organizations. But her favorite and lifelong work was that of devoted wife, mother and homemaker.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at First Congregational Church, with burial in Waterloo Cemetery. Public visitation will be for one hour before services at the church. Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street is in charge of the arrangements.

The family requests that donations be directed toward the First Congregational Church Music Fund or Quilter’s Circle in lieu of flowers.

The family would like to thank the staff of Friendship Village/Lakeview Landing and especially Cedar Valley Hospice for their loving and thoughtful care of Mildred.

May God grant you Everlasting Love.

May God grant you Eternal Rest and Peace.
