A PIONEER'S DEATH

Founder of First Drugstore in Waterloo Dies at Perry

Paul Davis has received news of the death of an uncle, Isaac Parmenter, who was a pioneer citizen of Waterloo, but removed from this city about 35 years ago. Mr. Parmenter came to Waterloo in 1855 and, in company with Joshua Davis, (father of Paul) established the first drug store in the town. They conducted this establishment until 1865, when they sold it to the Snowdens. Mr. Parmenter shortly afterwards moved away from this city and was living at Perry, Iowa, prior to his death.

He leaves three sons and one daughter.

He was 81 years of age when he died.

[Waterloo Semi Weekly Courier, Tuesday, May 22, 1900, Waterloo, Iowa

[From Monday's Daily] The Chief-Reporter of Perry, Iowa, is at hand containing an account of the death of Isaac Parmenter, an old-time resident of Waterloo, and an uncle of Paul Davis, now of this city. He was in the drug business here in an early day in partnership with J. Davis and the firm afterwards sold out to G. O.
Snowden.

Mr. Parmenter's first wife died and was buried in the cemetery here.

The Chief-Reporter says of the death:

"The death of Isaac Parmenter last Thursday evening removed another of the first settlers and businessmen of Perry. The deceased had been failing for several years and rapidly in the past few months. For the past year he has made his home with his son, A. W.

"His last days were free from pain and suffering, and he died peacefully, The funeral services were conducted by Rev. McDade on Saturday afternoon and the remains interred in the city cemetery.

"Isaac Parmenter was born in Monroe County, New York, January 25th, 1819, and died at Perry, Iowa, May 10, 1900, aged 81 years, 3 months and 15 days.

He came to Iowa in April, 1855, and settled at Waterloo, Iowa. He started the first drug store in that city. In 1865 he left Waterloo and located in Boonsboro, in the merchandise business. He came to Perry in 1865, and opened a grocery store, and continued in that business until 1868, when old age and failing health compelled him to retire.

"His first wife died in 1864. His second wife died in Perry in 1898. He had four children, all now living: A. W., of Perry; Smith of Jamaica; Mrs. Ollie J. Ames, of Omaha, and Mrs. Carrie Ellison of Atwood, Kan.

"He joined the M. E. church in 1857, and remained an active and consistent member to his death. He was especially active in the Sunday school work, and his best energies were always directed to build up the best Christian sentiment in society, both among the young and old.

"In all his business transactions he was scrupulously honest and in his long business career in Perry he retained the friendship of those who knew him first and had dealings with him through Dearly thirty years of business life. At the time of his retirement he was the oldest merchant in Perry, and none ever enjoyed greater respect and confidence. A pioneer and an upright citizen is taken away in his death, but his good name will linger a long time."
