WATERLOO - Owen E. "Big 0" Hankner, 77, of Waterloo, died Friday, March 1, 2002, at Allen Hospital of heart failure.

He was born June 26, 1924, in Tripoli, son of Ida Hankner. He married Jean Mabb in January 1949, in Waterloo. She died Dec. 9, 1974. He then married Ruth Steffeney on March 12, 1977, in Waterloo.

Mr. Hankner served with the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theatre. He had been employed at Titus Manufacturing for 20 years, and later at Land O'Lakes for 10 years. He then drove a taxi for the Yellow Cab Co. for 20 years.

Survived by his wife; two sons, Douglas of Minneapolis and Dennis of Chandler, Ariz.; a daughter, Sue Steffeney Pfalzgraf of Waterloo; two stepsons, Gary Steffeney of Waterloo and Lee Steffeney of Laguna Hills, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by a stepson, Dennis Steffeney.

Services: 1 p.m. Thursday at First Congregational Church, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery Military rites will be conducted by Becker-Chapman American Legion Post 138 and Waterloo Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1623. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Parrott and Wood Funeral Home, an Overtoil Family Service, and for an hour before services Thursday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the family.
