WATERLOO — Buffy Renee Simmons, 44, of Waterloo, died Thursday, March 21, 2013.

She was born March 22, 1968, in Waterloo, daughter of Samuel and Cheri Porter. She married Eric Simmons on Dec. 19, 1992, in Waterloo, and they later divorced.

Ms. Simmons graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 1986, then served in the U.S. Army in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, during Desert Storm. She returned to the Cedar Falls area where she continued her education at the University of Northern Iowa and later obtained her BSN degree from Allen School of Nursing. She worked as a nurse for Allen Hospital, Covenant Medical Center and currently was employed as a nurse for Tyson Foods.

Survived by a daughter, Shelby of Waterloo; her mother and stepfather, Cheri and Dennis Stoneman of Waterloo; her father and stepmother, Samuel and Marilyn Porter of Dallas; a stepson, Clinton Simmons of Missouri; a stepdaughter, Amanda Attebury of Warsaw, Mo.; a stepgrandchild, Zoey; a brother, Samuel Ralph (DeDe) Porter Jr. of Waterloo; a stepsister, Michelle (Dan) Seeks of Cedar Falls; aunt and uncles Rick (Linda) French and Jerry (Pat) Mullenix, both of Waterloo, and Cora French Thompson; and several nieces and nephews.

Services: 10 a.m. Wednesday at Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories, an Overton Family Service, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by Cedar Falls AMVETS. Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel.

Memorial fund in lieu of flowers is being established to further her daughter’s education.

In recent years Buffy’s health had declined, and she was on the transplant list for kidney and pancreas. She enjoyed reading and especially her nursing career.
