MOSS, Durwood Whittier 1892-1976

CEDAR FALLS - Services for Durwood Whittier Moss, 83, of 1685 W. 12th St., will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Dahl-VanHove-School Funeral Home with burial at Fairview Cemetery.

Mr. Moss died Monday in a Sun City, Arizona hospital where he had undergone surgery in early November.

He was born April 23, 1892, in Boone, the son of David W. and Maria L. Getgen Moss. He married Frances Brown of Des Moines August 25, 1917. She died in 1968.

He was captain of the Iowa State University football team in 1916 and was a member of the Athletic Board at Iowa State University for many years. He spent [28?] months in the Army during World War I and served 10 months overseas.

Mr. Moss was in the lumber business in Parkersburg before coming to Cedar Falls in 1923 where he was associated with Cedar lumber Co. He became president of the company in 1932.

After retirement he built a home in Sun City, Arizona, but he was still president of the Cedar Lumber Co board of directors at the time of his death.

He was a charter member and post commander of the American Legion in Parkersburg and Cedar Falls; director of Viking Pump Co. for 17 years and of Wagner Manufacturing Co. for 10 years. He served as a member of the Cedar Falls Board of Education for 15 years.

He was also chairman of the Selective Service Board in this area for 15 years and was a charter member of the Cedar Falls Lions Club. Other associations include, 10 years as a member of the U.S. Cavalry Reserve Officers and four years service with the Iowa State National Guard during World War II.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Robert P. Berry, Skyview Drive, and Mrs. Dale H. Boysen of 1615 W. 12th St., and a sister, Mrs. Margaret Quinby of Seattle, Wash.

Memorials should be directed to the Alumni Achievement Fund of Iowa State University as an athletic football scholarship in memory of D. W. Moss 1916.
