WATERLOO — Raphael “Ray” Freidhoff, 89, of Waterloo, died Friday, March 1, 2013, at Ravenwood Nursing and Rehab Center.

He was born Jan. 20, 1924, near Elma, son of Joseph and Marie Lensing Freidhof. He married Alice Heying on Oct. 7, 1947, in Alta Vista.

Mr. Freidhoff was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was employed with Iowa Public Service Co. for many years, retiring in 1984.

Survived by his wife; five daughters: Linda (Dan) Thies of Shellsburg, Susan (Camil Zonic) Nosbisch of Waterloo, Karen (Rich) Peterson of Waverly, Jane (Dan) Fischels of Independence and Jean (Bill) McDuffee of Tampa, Fla.; five sons, Kevin (Terri) of Garner, N.C., Pete (Kim) of Arvada, Colo., Anthony and Kent, both of Waterloo, and Todd (Michelle) of Johnston; a daughter-in-law, Patti Freidhoff of Byron Center, Mich.; 18 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by a son, Steve; four brothers: John, Vince, Jim and Gene Freidhof; and two sisters, Florence Fitzgerald and Marie Catherine Deutsch.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery, where full military rites will be conducted by Evansdale AMVETS Post 31, Waterloo AMVETS Post 19 and the U.S. Navy Honor Guard. Visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, with a 4 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil. Visitation also an hour before services Thursday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Family was everything to Ray. He loved Alice and all of his kids to the very end.
