CEDAR FALLS - Irene B. Petersen, 82, of Cedar Falls, formerly of Waterloo and Des Moines, died Tuesday, Feb. 21, at Sartori Memorial Hospital.
She was born Feb. 18, 1924, in Waterloo, daughter of William and Betty Weis Ahlhelm. She married Henrik J. Petersen March 20, 1947, and they were later divorced.
Irene attended St. John School in Waterloo and graduated from East Waterloo High School. She worked at the Black Hawk County Treasurer's Office for several years and then moved to Des Moines where she worked for the Des Moines Register for a number of years. Upon returning to the Waterloo-Cedar Falls area, she was employed with Younkers until retiring. She was a senior companion and volunteered in vacation Bible school and religious education at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Cedar Falls.
Survived by a daughter, Lisa (Bill) Youngblut of Waterloo; three brothers, Ralph (Maye) Ahlhelm and Larry Ahlhelm, both of Evansdale, and Robert (Tommie) Ahlhelm of Des Moines; and a sister, Elaine Berry of Waterloo.
Preceded in death by her parents; a son, Peter; a daughter, Kristelle Petersen; a brother, Donald Ahlhelm; and a sister, Madeline Shellhorn.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick Catholic Church. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, where there will be a 7 p.m. vigil service, and for an hour before services Saturday at the church.
