WATERLOO — Kathryn Ann Young, 91, of Waterloo, died at home Monday, Feb. 18, 2013.

She was born Sept. 13, 1921, in Lawler, daughter of Leo and Margaret Murray Shekleton. She married David Arthur Young on Oct. 5, 1957, in New Hampton. He died Nov. 18, 1996.

Mrs. Young graduated from New Hampton High School in 1940 and from Pitze’s Waterloo School of Beauty Culture in 1941. She owned her own beauty salon in New Hampton for 20 years, during which time she also was a state inspector for the State Department of Health for 10 years. In 1959 she became a cosmetology instructor then was founder and owner of Young Cosmetology College, which also included eight schools and five salons in Iowa and Illinois. She was president of the Iowa School Association of Cosmetology, president of the National Cosmetology Association Affiliate 130 in Iowa, inducted into the New Hampton High School Hall of Fame, Iowa Cosmetology Hall of Fame, received the Glenn Tullis Award for 50 years of service and received the National Lifetime Achievement Award for Cosmetology.

Survived by two daughters, Kimberly (Jim) Kalkhoff and Kathryn (Jim) Stephens, both of Waterloo; two grandchildren, Rachel Kalkhoff and Brooke Stephens; and two stepgrandchildren, Scott Stephens and Kelly Stephens Johnson.

Preceded in death by an infant son, David L.; a sister, Alta (Jerome) Britt; and three brothers, Bob, Harry and Leo (Dorothy) Shekleton.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday at St. Edward Catholic Church, Waterloo, with burial in Mount Carmel Cemetery, Lawler. Visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, with a 4 p.m. Catholic Daughters of the Americas rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil. Visitation also an hour before services Friday at the church.

Memorials may be made to the family.

Kathryn’s passions in life involved cosmetology, her loving family and precious grandchildren, traveling with her beloved husband, Dave, and spending time at the family cabin on the Mississippi.
