Paula Ray Kain, 60, of Iowa City died Monday, September 8, 2003, at her home of cancer. She was born January 10, 1943 in Lake Park, Iowa, the daughter of Everett and Alva Anna (Puck) Schwarzenbach.

She received her B.A. in teaching from the University of Northern Iowa and taught in elementary schools for most of her years in Belmond, Iowa. Paula endowed the National Patient Advocacy Office in Des Moines, Iowa.

She is survived by her three sons: James Edward (Laura) Kain, Jr. of Iowa City, Brad Everett (Penny) Kain of Eldridge, Iowa and Matthew P. (Diana) Kain of Riverside, Iowa; four grandchildren, Andrew Gunar, Lars Edward, Lily Raee and Gabriel James Kain; her mother, Alva Schwarzenbach of Iowa City; two brothers, Everett (Patty) Schwarzenbach of Egg Harbor City, New Jersey and Dan Schwarzenbach of Bristol, Connecticut; a sister, Pauline (Keith) Branstetter of Iowa City and a sister-in-law, Arlene Schwarzenbach of Cedar Falls.

Paula was preceded in death by her father and a brother, Lyle Schwarzenbach.

Funeral services were 4:00 p.m. Friday at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Waverly, Iowa with inurnment in Fairview Cemetery in Cedar Falls, Iowa at a later date. A memorial fund will be established.
