WELTER, EDABARN, HOSE, BERINOBIS

WATERLOO — Edward C. Welter, 91, of Independence, formerly of Waterloo, died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2013, at the VA Medical Center, Iowa City.

He was born Feb. 3, 1922, in Crookston, Minn., son of Fred and Elizabeth Edabarn Welter. He married Emma Hose on June 30, 1945, in Hawaii. She died Dec. 14, 1994.

Mr. Welter was a private first class in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1940 to 1946. He was stationed at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii aboard the USS Arizona. He was employed at John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works, retiring after 36 years.

Survived by a stepson, Clifford (Sally) Berinobis of Elk Run Heights; 16 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and 17 great-great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by a stepson, Rudolph Berinobis.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday at Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories, an Overton Family Service, where visitation begins at 9 a.m., with burial in Garden of Memories. Military rites will be conducted by Becker-Chapman American Legion Post 138 and Waterloo VFW Post 1623.

Edward was Iowa’s last survivor from the historic battleship USS Arizona.
