ANDREW RICE DIED LAST WEEK

Long Time Resident of Garfield Township Died Sept. 19th

Andrew Rice of Hudson, long time resident of Garfield Township, passed away at his home on Monday of last week following a lingering illness. He had not enjoyed good health for several years but last spring his condition became more aggravated and he was removed to the Hudson hospital where he remained but a few days. He then returned home and two weeks prior to his death he became gradually worse until death claimed him.

Funeral services were held at the Hudson Lutheran Church last Thursday afternoon with Rev. G. O. Gronseth in charge. Burial was made in the Hudson Cemetery.

Andrew Thomas Rice was born at Bergen, Norway, January 4, 1866, and so was past 72 years of age at the time of his death. After completing his schooling, he was a sailor for several years before coming to America in 1888. He located on a farm near Jewell, Iowa, where on May 20, 1888, he was united in marriage with Hilda Gronning. In 1902 they came to this vicinity, locating on a farm northeast of Hawarden. Six years later he purchased a farm near Hudson where he lived continuously from that time until his death.

He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife and seven children. The children are Thomas A. Rice, Sioux Center; J. Martin and Arthur H. Rice, Hudson; Mrs. Walford Peterson, Canton; Mrs. John Vipond, Hudson; Mrs. Ernest Johnson and Mrs. George Anderberg, Alcester. He also leaves 19 grandchildren, two sisters and two brothers in Norway and one sister in Paulsbo, Washington.

Mr. Rice was reared in the Lutheran faith and was a faithful attendant and supporter of the Lutheran church in Hudson when his health permitted. He was an honest and upright man and the Hudson community has lost one of its most highly esteemed and respected men in his passing.
