LA PORTE CITY — Marilyn O. Smit, 82, of La Porte City, died Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013, at Pleasantview Home, Kalona, of cancer.

She was born Oct. 11, 1930, in Woden, daughter of Ole and Malena Olson Swenson. She married Gerald W. “Red” Smit on May 27, 1956, in Scarville. He died Feb. 7, 1995.

Mrs. Smit received her bachelor’s degree in teaching from the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls. She taught country school in Grant Township, Woden, Scarville and Fertile for seven years, then taught fifth grade in La Porte City for another 32 years, retiring in 1994.

Survived by a son, Tim (Kathy) of Wellman; three grandchildren, Maggy, Aaron and Ryan Smit, all of Wellman; a sister, Jan (Gary) Wilt of La Porte City; and nine nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by a son, Michael; and a sister, Eleanor Hanna.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday at the American Lutheran Church, where visitation begins at 9 a.m., with burial in West View Cemetery, both in La Porte City. La Porte City Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.
