Shirley J. Schoonover Welter, 77, of Waterloo, died Friday, January 25, at Allen Memorial Hospital.

She was born October 19, 1935 in Benton County, daughter of Dale, Sr. and Ruby Rice Schoonover. She married James Welter on August 18, 1953 in Waterloo.

Shirley was employed with the Waterloo Post Office for 34 years, retiring in 2000.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, Andrew Welter and Randy (Barbara) Welter, both of Waterloo; a daughter, Cathy Welter of Waterloo; six grandchildren and three great grandchildren and one on the way; and two brothers, Harold (Marian) Schoonover of Waterloo and Richard (Mary) Schoonover of Vinton.

Preceded in death by a daughter, Teresa Lessman; two brothers, William Schoonover and Dale Schoonover, Jr.; and two sisters, Glennis Staker and Evelyn Elliott-Brown.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway with burial in the Reinbeck Cemetery, Reinbeck. Public visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday and for an hour before services Wednesday at the funeral home.

The family would like to make special mention of the long time friendship with Lou and Mary Braatz.
