WATERLOO — John D. Hersey Jr., 78, of Waterloo, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013, at Covenant Medical Center.

He was born Jan. 8, 1935, in New Hartford, son of John and Tillie Huisman Hersey. He married Maria Wallisch on Jan. 29, 1958, in Karlsruhe, Germany. She died May 22, 1991. He married Rosemary Tjebkes on Oct. 29, 1991, in Waterloo.

Mr. Hersey earned his GED in the U.S. Army and served in Europe for two years. He worked for Waterloo Fire Rescue for 32 years, retiring in 1990.

Survived by: his wife of Waterloo; a son, Timothy (Cindy) of Cedar Falls; three daughters: Monica Grandon of Waterloo, Nancy (Robert Biretz) Bartlett of Cedar Falls and Lisa (Jay) Perkins of New Hartford; three stepdaughters, Roxane (Gary) Pfab of Dubuque, Luanne (Ron) Juchem of Hershey, Pa., and Ruth (John) Kugel of Madrid; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; five sisters: Mabel Gillett of Norwalk, Gloria Card of Marshalltown, Minnie (Fred) Feckers of Clarksville, Betty Ehmen of Waterloo and Jane Rice of Waverly; and a brother, Fred Hersey of Waterloo.

Preceded in death by his wife, Maria; and a stepgranddaughter, April Rose Juchem.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday at New Beginnings First Wesleyan Church, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery with military honors by Waterloo AMVETS Post No. 19 and Evansdale AMVETS Post No. 31. Visitation from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Locke Funeral Home.
