[Waterloo Evening Courier, Wednesday, June 07, 1916, Waterloo, Iowa]

DEAD IN HIS HOME

Funeral services for the late Alonzo O. Campbell will be conducted at the home of a sister, Mrs. Sarah J. Garland, 916 Iowa Street, tomorrow at 10 a.m. Robert Anderson post G. A. R. will be in charge and burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.

Mr. Campbell was last seen alive about noon Thursday, June 1, by neighbors. He spoke of his intention of visiting a friend in the country to secure tomato plants for his garden that afternoon. Some uneasiness was felt by neighbors when he was not seen the next day and after worrying for several days, Mrs. P. J. Sheehan decided to investigate.

Tuesday about 6 p.m. she looked through a window in his home and saw the body laying on the floor beneath a table. Dr. S. D. Smith, county coroner, was notified and when investigation was made it was decided that he had been dead several days.

He was subject to attacks of apoplexy and this is believed to have caused death as he was about to retire. A kerosene lamp was found on the table with the chimney set beside it. A note left for him about 5 p.m. was still in the door.

Mr. Campbell had been a resident of Waterloo for more than 30 years. He was a brick mason until a few years ago. He made a living from his garden plot. Mr. Campbell was a Civil War veteran.

Mrs. Peter Jacoby, 320 Columbia Street and Mrs. Garland, sisters of the deceased, are the only relatives.
