Ernest V. “Jan” Garber, 87, of Cedar Falls, died of multiple myeloma on Sunday, December 21, 2008, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo.

He was born January 14, 1921 in Waterloo, the son of Ernest C. and Elizabeth (Ankeny) Garber.

Jan married Mae A. Sommer on January 2, 1942 in Waterloo. She preceded him in death on March 4, 1999.

Jan was a graduate of Waterloo West High School and served from 1944-1946 in the US Navy during WW II in the Pacific Theatre of Operations. He worked for John Deere at the Product Engineering Center for thirty-six years, retiring in 1983. Jan was also a professional musician most of his life.

Survivors include his son, Michael J. (Dianne) Garber, of Gilroy, California; his daughter, Linda M. (Ron) Hibben, of Cedar Falls; seven grandchildren, Blake Hibben, Michelle Garber, Stephen Garber, Sara-Ann Garber, Aubree Garber, Timothy Garber, and Juliana Garber; a brother, Edward Garber, of Lake Havasu City, Arizona, and a sister, Avis (George) Buckley, of Mesquite, Nevada.

Jan was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and a sister-in-law, Betty Garber.

Funeral services will be 10:30 am Wednesday, December 24, 2008, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with burial at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, both in Waterloo. Visitation will be 3—7:00 pm Tuesday at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, where a 4:00 pm Rosary Service and a 7:00 pm Vigil Service will be conducted. Visitation also one hour before service at the church.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice.
