Delmar F. Blankenhagen, 81, of Waterloo, died Sunday, January 4, 2009, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo.

Delmar was born May 3, 1927, at New Ulm, Minnesota, the son of Charles & Elsie Podratz Blankenhagen.

He married Erna Eustace May 10, 1947 at Trenton, New Jersey. Delmar served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was an Engineer for M & St. L Railroad for 12 years and retired from Centel Phone Company in 1989, after 22 years of service. Delmar was an Elder at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Fort Dodge.

Survivors include his wife, Erna Blankenhagen of Waterloo; one son, Del (Jeri) Blankenhagen of Newnan, Georgia; three daughters, Deb (Bruce) Johnson of Waterloo, Cindie (Randy) Archer of Smith Center, Kansas and Cara (Jim) Burke of Cedar Falls, twelve grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren.

Delmar was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Charles Blankenhagen, two grandsons, one great grandson, two brothers including his twin, and two sisters.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 7, 2009, at College Hill Lutheran Church, Cedar Falls, with burial at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at North Lawn Cemetery, Ft. Dodge, Iowa. Military rites will be conducted by Ft. Dodge VFW Post 4. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, January 6, 2009 at the Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home and for one hour prior to service time at the church on Wednesday.

Memorials may be directed to the family.
