A veteran of seven years in the navy, James Robert Lovett was promoted recently Iron radioman first class to chief radioman and is now home on 15-day furlough with his wife and daughter, visiting in the homes of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Lovett, 415 Vine Street; his wife parents, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Baker, 163 Polk Street, and other relatives and friends.
Lovett's promotion followed eight months' training in a radio engineering course at the Naval Radio Research Laboratory. Washington, D. C. He was one of six men in a class of 30 to qualify.
During his years in the navy James has served on a battleship and on several destroyers. At the outbreak of the war he was on convoy duty in the Atlantic pecan. His travels have taken him to many foreign ports.
Lovett was graduated from Waterloo East High School in 1934.
He has been ordered to San Diego, Cal; to await further orders and will be accompanied there by his wife and two-year-old daughter, Faith Mary. His wife is the former Faith Ellen Baker.
