MILLER, COMBS, SMELSER, HILTON

Clarence S. Miller, 69, died at 8:20 p.m. Saturday at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Ada Hilton, 417 West Park avenue, where he had lived for several years. He had been bedfast for six weeks.

Formerly employed in the Waterloo post office, he was a mail carrier in the downtown Waterloo district for 22 years but had retired. He also served as first reader in the First Church of Christ, Scientist, for three years.

Mr. Miller had lived in Waterloo all his life, having been born here Nov. 22, 1872, the son of Jesse Miller and Jane (Combs) Miller. The father was a building contractor here.

He was a graduate of West High school and entered the employ of the postoffice at 17 years of age. On Nov. 2, 1899, he married Inza Mae Smelser at Cedar Falls. She died April 12, 1939.

Surviving besides the daughter, Mrs. Hilton, is a son, Stewart F. Miller, Duluth, Minn. There are also a granddaughter and grandson, June Hilton and Hubert C. Miller. A brother, Hubert G. Miller, a retired Southern railroad engineer, died in Chattanooga, Tenn., last summer.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Kistner Chapel by W. W. Wiegand, Christian Science reader. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
