MRS. J. C. GATES

After a lingering illness of cancer, Mrs. J. C. Gates died at 6:50 p.m. yesterday at her home, 402 Franklin Street, age 80 years. Funeral services will be from the home at 3 p.m. tomorrow. Rev. E. J. Lockwood of Grace M. E. Church in charge. Burial will be in Fairview.

Mrs. Gates' maiden name was Sarah Frances Ramsey. She was born April 25, 1840, in Ogden, Monroe County, N. Y. When a young woman she taught art in Genesee Seminary, at Lima, N. Y.

She was married to John Cook Gates, a pioneer of Waterloo, May 17, 1877. He died in December 1917.

She had lived in this city 43 years, being all that time a member of Grace Methodist Episcopal Church. She had been a Methodist practically all her life.

Mr. Gates was twice married. His first wife died when his daughter Fanny was a child. She is now living in New York, but arrived last night. Her brother, John Howard Gates is a justice of the Supreme Court in South Dakota, located at Pierre. He will come for the funeral. In addition to the two step-children, Mrs. Gates is survived by an adopted daughter, Mrs. George Sproesser, Jr., of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She is here and her husband will come later for the funeral.

Mrs. Gates is the last of her family to pass away.

FOUR BENEFICIARIES
ARE NAMED IN-WILL OF
MRS. SARAH F. GATES

Four beneficiaries are named in the will of Sarah P. Gates, prominent Waterloo woman, who died at her home, 402 Franklin Street, last Thursday evening. The will was filed early this afternoon.

Two hundred dollars is given to the Women's Foreign Missionary society of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Of the residue, two-sevenths goes to Mrs. George S. Sproesser, Sioux Falls, S. D., and the remaining five-sevenths goes to John Howard Gates. Pierre. S. D., and Fanny Cook Gates, of New York. They are to share and share alike.

J. D. Liftfring. a law partner of Mr. Gates for many years, was named administrator. The sum of the estate was not made public.
