EVANSDALE, IOWA — Harvey Dean Happel, 73, of Evansdale, died Friday, December 21, at Allen Hospital, Waterloo, of lung cancer.

He was born February 8, 1939, in Denver, the son of Elmer and Elaine Thurm Happel. He married Connie Bettis in 1961, and they later divorced.

He married Kathleen “Kathy” Schoonover Coburn on June 20, 1986, at the Little Brown Church, Nashua. She died on December 3, 2012.

Mr. Happel graduated from Waterloo East High School. He was employed at John Deere in the foundry, retiring in 1989. He also helped his father build homes. He then worked at Lawless & Son Trucking and Bill Doran Flowers.

Harvey is survived by two sons, Scott of Houston and Steven of Dallas; three stepsons: Dennis (Mary) Ricker of Burton, Mich., and Douglas Hammond and Kevin Coburn, both of Evansdale; a stepdaughter, Pamela (Jeff) Lawless of Waterloo; 12 grandchildren: Justin and Renee Ricker, Leslie, Lindie and Alex Hammond, Amanda Tomlinson, Tim Shumaker, James Swehla, and Sarah, Casey, Hollie and Shelbie Lawless; five great-grandchildren: Kyler and Kayah Lyons, Graysyn Downing, and Mason and Amaya Tomlinson; two brothers, Elden (Bonnie) of Evansdale and Arlen (Mary Ann) of Hudson; and three sisters: Betty (Jerry) Walter of Cedar Falls, Jane (Bill) Hambly of Waterloo and Karen (Gerald) Gardner of Waterloo.

He was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Paula Hammond.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Ascension Lutheran Church, Waterloo, with inurnment at a later date. Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories, an Overton Family Service, Waterloo.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice.
