Albert Donald Olmstead, 94, of Menomonee Falls, WI, and formerly of Cedar Falls, died Monday, September 17, 2007, at Linden Grove in Menomonee Falls. He was born January 6, 1913 in Cedar Falls, the son of Warren and Fern (Garrison) Olmstead.
He married Christine Dall on July 5, 1939 in Davenport, Iowa. She preceded him in death on October 5, 2001.
Albert served in the US Army during World War II in the European Theatre of Operations, and was awarded the Bronze Star for heroism. He worked as a machinist at Viking Pump for 47 years, retiring in the 1970s. Albert and his wife were lifetime members of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls, and faithfully attended church as long as they were able. He enjoyed doing many things during his lifetime. Albert’s interests included gardening, traveling, and photography. He also enjoyed whittling, drawing, and doing caricatures of his friends. Albert loved and enjoyed his friends very much; he helped coordinate and schedule high school reunions well into his 70’s.
Survivors include one daughter, Barbara Jean (Al) Thornberry, of Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin; three grandsons, Jacob, Adam, and Benjamin Thornberry, all of Menomonee Falls; and a sister-in-law, Wilma Dall, of Reinbeck.
Albert was preceded in death by his parents and wife, a sister-in-law, Ella Snow, and two brothers-in-law, Milford Snow and Holger Dall.
Funeral services will be 1:30 pm Thursday, September 20, 2007, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, with interment at Greenwood Cemetery, both in Cedar Falls. Graveside military honors will be by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49. Visitation will be 5—8:00 pm today at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, and one hour before the service at the church.
