WATERLOO — Donald J. Duggan, 80, of Waterloo, died Monday, Dec. 3, 2012, at Cedar Valley Hospice Home of natural causes.

He was born July 26, 1932, in Dubuque, son of Donald L. and Olive “Mickey” McGinnis Duggan. He married Mary J. Kelly on Aug. 25, 1956, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Waterloo. She died March 28, 2009.

Mr. Duggan graduated from Loras College with a bachelor’s degree in education. He later earned his master’s degree in school administration from the University of Northern Iowa. He began his teaching career at Transfiguration School, Wauconda, Ill., before returning to Waterloo to teach and coach at Our Lady of Victory Academy. In 1959 he began a 30-year career at Jack M. Logan Intermediate School, first as a teacher, then as an assistant principal and finally serving more than 10 years as the principal through 1989. He then served as principal of West Intermediate School from 1989 to 1992. In 1993 he served as an education coordinator for the Waterloo Schools, retiring in June 1993. He was a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus and was a member of the Elks Club, St. Edward’s Church and Goodwill Industries of Northeast Iowa board of directors.

Survived by two daughters, Patrice Duggan of Council Bluffs and Kathy (Tim) Conlan of Des Moines; four sons: Dennis (Suzanne) of Cedar Falls, Jeff (Janet) and Steve (Renee), both of Waterloo, and David (Kim) of New York; seven grandchildren, Ryan, Tim and Danny, all of Cedar Falls, Maureen, Joe and Kyle, all of Waterloo, and Jake of New York; three great-grandchildren: Keenan, Kylen and Kael; a sister, Debbie Duggan of Des Moines; and a brother, Jack (Karen) of Savannah, Ga.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Edward Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, where there will be a 4 p.m. 4th Degree Knights of Columbus rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil.

Memorials may be directed to the church or Cedar Valley Hospice.
