WATERLOO — Dennis L. Gates, 57, of Waterloo, died at home Sunday, Dec. 2, 2012.

He was born Jan. 12, 1955, in Waterloo, son of Rodney and Betty Gates Havens. He married Colleen Hippen in 1974 in Waterloo, and they later divorced.

Mr. Gates graduated from Waterloo East High School. He worked for the city of Waterloo for 15 years and was a bus driver for Prime Time and the Royal Flush Casino.

Survived by three sons: Kevin Gates, Kurtis Gates and Martin Hemenway, all of Waterloo; two grandchildren; seven brothers, Randy Sweeney, Clifford Gates Jr., Kenneth Gates, Larry (Annie) Gates and Ronald Gates, all of Waterloo, Donald (Shirley) Gates of Aurora, Mo., and LaVerne (Jeanette) Gates of Florida; and five sisters: Charlotte Sweeney, Sandy Havens, Karen Moore and Barbara Davis, all of Waterloo, and Joan Hanley of St. Petersburg, Fla.

Preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Sally Gates and LaVonne Rochholz; and a brother, Gerald Gates.

Graveside inurnment: 2 p.m. Thursday at Shaulis Road Cemetery. The Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
