WATERLOO — Donald B. Wendt, 85, of Waterloo, died Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012, at Lakeview Landing.

He was born March 4, 1927, in Richmond, Va., son of Frank G. and Grace Starr Wendt. He married Dorothy “Dot” Phillips on March 18, 1951, in Cedar Falls.

Mr. Wendt served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He received his undergraduate degree from Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill., and his master’s degree from Iowa State Teachers College, Cedar Falls. He was an associate professor of music at the University of Northern Iowa for 31 years, retiring in 1989. He played in the Richmond Symphony as a youth, then in the Atlanta Symphony for five years. He played with the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony for 46 years and also played in the New Horizons Band for parties and social gatherings. At one time over his career, he was a marching band director; orchestra director; a bassoon, saxophone, flute and clarinet teacher; a maker of fine double reeds; and an expert and teacher in instrument repair.

Survived by his wife; three daughters: Olive Wendt of Santa Cruz, Calif., Carol Wendt of Richmond, Va., and Kathryn (Michael) Tolliver of McKenney, Va.; a brother, William “Bill” (Hope) of Pinehurst, N.C.; a grandchild; two stepgrandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by an infant son, John Thomas; and two brothers, Frank and Charles.

Memorial services: 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Unitarian Universalist Church, Cedar Falls, preceded by an hour of visitation. The Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
