GEORGE M. HUGHES DIES
OF TUBERCULOSIS AFTER
ILLNESS OF TWO YEARS

LA PORTE CITY, IOWA - George Maxwell Hughes, age 43, died at his home in this city shortly before 10 a.m. Saturday, after an illness of more than two years' duration from tuberculosis. Max, as he was familiarly called by his many friends, was patient and uncomplaining and he passed quietly away.

Mr. Hughes was of a quiet retiring disposition, ever mindful of his own affairs, a great lover of home and every bit of spare time was utilized in some useful work on his own premises.

Mr. Hughes was a barber by trade and worked in the Harry Esher Shop for 10 years, resigning his position there on account of his health two years ago.

George Maxwell Hughes was born March 11, 1879, at Middlebury, Indiana, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Hughes. There he grew to manhood and when the call came for the Spanish-American War troops he enlisted and was sent to a camp in Florida, where he became ill. He was returned home on furlough and was given an honorable discharge at the close of the war. He then went to California, where he remained six years, coming from there to La Porte City, where he had since resided.

He was married on November 4, 1912 to Miss Mildred Hitt, who survives him.

He is also survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Hughes, Middlebury, Indiana; one brother, I. M. Hughes, La Porte City, Iowa; one sister, Mrs. Ernest Schultz, South Milford, Indiana.

Funeral services were this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, from the late home, in charge of Rev. E. E. Clements, pastor of the M. E. Church, of which Mr. Hughes was a member. Burial was in West View Cemetery.

John Smith, Iowa Falls, cousin of Mrs. Hughes, was here for the last rites. The parents were unable to come on account of illness.
