BEDARD, Gerald Joseph 1916-2009

Gerald Joseph Bedard, 93, died February 10, 2009, at the Cabrillo Care Center in San Luis Obispo, California of natural causes.

He was born February 2, 1916 the oldest of five children, to Arthur and Eleanor Bedard of rural La Porte City.

Mr. Bedard graduated from St. Marys of Mt. Carmel High School at Eagle Center in 1933. He married Pearl Leona Brown of rural Waterloo in 1939 and began farming within a mile of his boyhood home on what is now Foulk Road west of La Porte City. He was an innovative farmer utilizing conservation techniques long before they became common practice and his contour planting in the early 1940s sparked much ribbing from neighbors. He served on boards with the Soil Conservation Service the Farmers Home Administration and was president of the Black Hawk County Farm Bureau from 1960 to 1962. After retiring from farming Gerald enjoyed winters in his home in Mesa Arizona where he made many new friends.

After celebrating fifty-one years of marriage Pearl died in 1990. In 1992 he married Doris Lorraine Rasmusen of Calgary, Alberta who preceded him in death in 2004.

He is survived by all six of his children: Patrick (Laurie Ann) of Florida and Arizona; David of Waterloo; Mary Ellen and Rebecca of San Luis Obispo, California; Lindley (Kim) of Beaverton, Oregon and Laurel (Brooke) of Santa Barbara, California, and his youngest brother Francis of Richmond California. He is also survived by four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Church with burial In the church cemetery. Public visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South St. where there will be a 6 p.m rosary. Visitation also one hour prior to services Wednesday at the church.
