WATERLOO - David C. Winegarden, 61, of Fremont, Calif., formerly of Waterloo, died Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2012, at Park View Health Care Center, Hayward, Calif., from a tumor in the brain from a renal cell carcinoma that metastasized.

He was born Sept. 26, 1951, in Waterloo, son of Dr. Richard L. and Hannah Waterland Winegarden.

Mr. Winegarden graduated from Waterloo West High School in 1969 and received a bachelor's degree in engineering science from Iowa State University in 1973. He taught electronics at National Institute of Technology, West Des Moines, until the mid-'80s when he moved to Silicon Valley to work at Sigma Designs with electronic hardware and software until the mid-'90s, then at The Center for Software Development, then Computational Technologies. While in high school he worked with an electrician for a summer and worked in a bookstore in Ames. In later years he again helped with electrical installations and worked at a bookstore in Berkeley during peak times. In Waterloo he had been a member of Boy Scout Troop 17 and attended the 1964 National Jamboree at Valley Forge with a side trip to the New York World's Fair.

Survived by four brothers: Steven (Nancy) Winegarden of Sunnyvale, Calif., Charles A. Winegarden of Fremont, Daniel J. (Lori) Pitts Winegarden of Clear Lake and Bruce R. Winegarden of Sammamish, Wash.; a step-sister, Shirley (Leonard) Flachman of Golden Valley, Minn.; and a stepbrother, Roger Ehlert of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.

Preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother, Dorothea Winegarden; and a stepbrother, Howard Ehlert.

Graveside services: 1:30 p.m. Friday at Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Locke Funeral Home.

Memorials may be directed to Insulin Pumpers of Palo Alto, Calif.

David had been a diabetic since age 3 and had started using an insulin pump about 20 years ago. He then helped with education and outreach efforts to help other people learn to manage them.
