Elvira A. Mellem (1918-2012)

WATERLOO — Elvira Anne Mellem, 94, of Northwood, formerly of Waterloo, died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2012, at Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

She was born Feb. 10, 1918, in Northwood, daughter of Lewis G. and Signe R. Rorvig Mellem. She graduated from Northwood High School in 1936, received her teaching certificate and a bachelor’s degree in education from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. She taught for 45 years in Kanawha, Clear Lake, and taught 3rd grade at Irving Elementary School in Waterloo until her retirement. She was a member of First Shell Rock Lutheran Church in Northwood, Worth County Historical Society, NEA and ISEA, and Childhood Education Association.

Survived by five nieces: Clare (Jack) May of Montclair, N.J., Joan Cassidy of Martinez, Calif., Katherine (Robert) Elgas of Waterloo, Jeanette (Charles) Metrebian of Thousand Oaks, Calif., and Carolyn Willi of Winchester, Va.; a nephew, Lewis Robert (Sharon) Mellem of Louisville, Ky.; and many other family members.

Preceded in death by five sisters: Esther, Geneva, Valborg, Agnes and Virginia; and two brothers, Victor in infancy, and Lewis R. Mellem.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday at First Shell Rock Lutheran Church, with burial in Sunset Rest Cemetery, both in Northwood. Public visitation from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Conner Colonial Chapel, Northwood, and will continue for an hour before services Monday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to First Shell Rock Lutheran Church in Northwood, Worth County Historical Society, Northwood Public Library, or the charity of one’s choice.
