[Waterloo Courier, Wednesday, December 15, 1886]

Suffocated By Coal Gas.

Yesterday morning Cyrus Ray, of Cedar Falls, only brother of Mrs. G. W. Barnes, of this city, died from the effects of coal gas. He was a partner in the livery firm of Cameron & Ray and slept in the office. On retiring Monday night he left the door of the stove—a soft coal burner—open.

Yesterday morning when Mr. Cameron came to the office he spoke to him and received an answer. He then went to another part of the building and going back to the office a short time afterwards he found that Ray had not got up nor could he get an answer from him. He then broke the door in and found him in an unconscious condition.

Every effort was used to revive him but in vain and he soon expired. Deceased
attended school in this city for two winters a few years since.

He was 22 years old and was a first-class young man. His sudden death is a
very sad affair, indeed.
