Raymond Eugene Smith, age 84, of Oelwein and Waterloo, died Thursday, September 27, 2012 at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.

He was born May 25, 1928 in Lamont, Iowa the son of Herman Joseph and Ruth Lawless Smith. Raymond served in the US Navy during World War II. He married Bessie Ellen Hope on September 8, 1951 at the Lutheran Church in West Union, Iowa.

Raymond was employed at John Deere & Co. for over 33 years, retiring in 1983. He was a member of Burton Avenue Baptist Church in Waterloo. Ray loved the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He was skilled at working with leather and enjoyed repairing cars.

Survivors include his wife, Bessie; 3 sons: Raymond David (Elaine) Smith of West Union, Glen Eugene Smith of Fayette and Herbert James (Julie) Smith of Dysart; 4 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Ellen Wilson of Cedar Rapids and Katherine Scovel of Hiawatha.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a great granddaughter, Jessica Lois Camp; 2 sisters, Barbara Meinders and Nettie King and 3 brothers, Chester, Herbert and Glenn Smith.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 2, 2012 at Burton Avenue Baptist Church in Waterloo. Graveside committal services will be held at 2:00 p.m. at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Hazelton, with Full Military Honors accorded by Oelwein American Legion Post 9 Honor Guard. Public visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Monday, October 1, 2012 at Garden View Chapel Funeral Home, 3655 Logan Avenue, Waterloo and an hour prior to the services on Tuesday at the church.
