Harvey Eugene Miles, age 87, of Waterloo, died Tuesday, September 25, 2012 at his home of natural causes.

He was born April 11, 1925 in Springfield, Missouri, the son of Leroy and Alta Warden Miles. He married Betty J. Hendrickson on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 1943 in Springfield, Missouri.

Harvey graduated from Senior High School in Springfield, MO where he excelled in Football, Baseball and boxing. Soon after marriage, Harvey and Betty moved to Waterloo where he worked at the Wonder Bread Bakery, John Deere and then purchased a motor rewinding business. Harvey built a new building for his expanding business, Motor Winding, Inc. from where he retired and sold the business to one of his employees. He continued to mentor that business well into to his retirement years.

Harvey was a member of Grace Bible Church in Evansdale where he taught Sunday school and was a Deacon in the Church. Harvey and the church board, was a visionary in relocating the new Grace Baptist Church located on the Hammond Avenue hill and until his death, was instrumental in continuing to teach in the church. Harvey was a Deacon and the chairman of the church board at Grace Baptist Church and was instrumental in the church’s growth.

Harvey was an avid Tennis player and continued to play until his death. He was a member of Black Hawk Tennis Club.

Survivors include 3 daughters: Linda (Jim) Blackledge of Waterloo; Cassandra Hiles of Goshen, OH and Tania (Mike) Richards of Flowery Branch, GA; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; a sister, Sally Baldwin of Springfield, MO and a brother, Harry (Joanna) Miles of Springfield, MO.

He was preceded in death by his parents; 2 sons, Terry in infancy and Harvey Miles II; a son-in-law, Richard Hiles and a sister, Betty.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 2, 2012 at Grace Baptist Church in Waterloo with burial in the Garden of Memories Cemetery. Public visitation will be held from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Monday, October 1, 2012 at the Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel and an hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the church.
