Darwin O. Nielsen, 92, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Waterloo, died Sunday, September 30, 2012 at Crestview Acres Nursing Home in Marion of natural causes.

He was born October 17, 1919 in Quesqueton, the son of Alex and Mable Bearbower Nielsen. He married Neva Stephens January 27, 1945 at Camp Lujune, North Carolina.

Mr. Nielsen was a driver for Briggs 27 years, retiring from there in 1981. He then drove cars for Holdiman Motors for 17 years. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Marines, serving in WW II. Darwin was a long time member of Grace Reformed Church in Waterloo and a member of the Becker-Chapman American Legion Post #138 in Waterloo. He was a woodworker and clockmaker, enjoyed playing his banjo and harmonica with friends, and loved his PT Cruiser.

He is survived by his wife of Cedar Rapids; one son, Steven (Kathy) Nielsen of Toole, Utah; two daughters, Carol (Jim) Nesbit of Jesup, and Cathy (Kirk) Gray of Vinton; one brother, James (Betty) Nielsen of Los Angeles, California; one sister Vena Ellis of Aitkin Minnesota; nine grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.

Darwin was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Orvil and Marshall Nielsen; and four sisters, Martha Kardell, Dorothy Johnston, Evelyn Helgrimson, and one in childhood.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Grace Reformed Church, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Visitation will be 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday at Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel on Kimball and one hour before the service at the church.

Memorials may be directed to Grace Reformed Church or Iowa Hospice.
