Richard Lynn Schmitt was born on December 14, 1944, in Waterloo, the son of Fred and Louise (Troudt) Schmitt. He died at the age of 67 on October 2, 2012, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo.

He grew up in Cedar Falls and graduated from Cedar Falls High School. After graduation, Richard went to work installing commercial sprinklers. He then worked in iron work for many years. Richard eventually started his own company, moving and rigging machinery and iron work.

On February 14, 2012, he was united in marriage to Kristi McDermott in Cedar Falls. Richard loved animals, especially horses. He enjoyed water skiing and was a former member of the Water Hawks. He was licensed to fly commercial and private planes. Richard also loved farming and hunting a wide variety of animals, including hunting bear in Canada.

Richard is survived by his wife, Kristi of Waterloo; a brother, Gerald (Jean) Schmitt of Shell Rock; two step-daughters, Amber (Andrew) Shimp of Waterloo and April (Jacob) Frisch of Grundy Center; a nephew, Chris (Angela) Schmitt of Waverly; and a niece, Jennifer (Tom) Price of Walworth, Wisconsin.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved horse, Buster.
