James P. Steely, 82, of Waterloo, passed away Tuesday morning, October 9 at Covenant Medical Center.

He was born June 24, 1930, in Waterloo, the son of William E. and Marion (Patterson) Steely. He attended Kingsley School, graduated from West High School and attended the University of Iowa.

He married JoAnn Beu in May 24, 1952 in Waterloo. They have one son.

Jim proudly served in the US Navy Construction Battalion (Sea Bees) during the Korean Conflict with units in Guantanamo Bay and French Morocco. He was in Sales and Marketing for 20 years with Rath Packing Co. While there, serving a term as President of the Rath Management Club.

He was the first manager of Conway Civic Center (now known as Five Sullivan Brothers Convention Center) overseeing its operation for 9 years. Jim then formed his own business as a distributor of computer forms in association with POS, Inc., of Waterloo, until his retirement.

Jim was a lifetime member of the Elks Club, a member of Nazareth Lutheran Church, serving longtime as an usher and also taught Sunday school there.

He enjoyed fishing, following the Iowa Hawkeyes and spending time with his family and pet dogs.

He is survived by his wife, son, Robert B. (Sheila Wedeking) Steely of Waverly; one brother, Robert A. (Nancy) Steely of Arizona and many friends.

Visitation is Friday, October 12, from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Hagarty – Waychoff – Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway. Services are Saturday, October 13, at 10:30 a.m. at Memorial Park Chapel, Memorial Park Cemetery with burial in the cemetery. Visitation also one hour prior to services Saturday at the chapel.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Bend Humane Society, Nazareth Lutheran Church or charity of your choice.
