HONORED CITIZEN DIES SUDDENLY

H. J. LICHTY SETTLED IN ORANGE TWP. IN 1863

Hiram J. Lichty, an early settler and well-known resident of Orange Township for many years, passed away at. 11:30 yesterday morning at his home, 820 South Street. His health began to fail three years ago. A paralytic condition developed and he had been bedfast three weeks. The end came unexpectedly, however.

Mr. Llchty was in his seventy-seventh year. He was horn Oct. 18, 1839, in Somerset County, Pa., and came to Iowa in 1863, settling in Orange Township. On March 13, 1866.

He was married to Sarah Miller, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Matthias Miller. Elder E. K. Buechley, a great-uncle of the bride, officiated. The couple celebrated their fiftieth anniversary of marriage last March.

In 1868 the couple moved onto a farm eight miles south of Waterloo. The virgin tract was converted into a productive farm. Modern Improvements were added until it became one of the best rural homes in the county. As he prospered Mr. Lichty purchased additional acres until he became one of the largest landowners in Orange Township. In 1902 the family moved to Waterloo.

Surviving Mr. Lichty are his widow and the following children: E. M. Lichty, Mrs. W. O. Tannreuther and Mrs. A. B. Zuck of Orange Township; A. M. Lichty of Pomona, Cal.. and Mrs. Homer Frantz of Long Beach, Cal. Also surviving are the following brothers and sister: W. H. Lichty of Nez Perce, Idaho; Allen L. Lichty of Morrill, Kansas; S. .T. Lichty of Waterloo and Mrs. Mary Miller of Somerset, Pa. John M. Lichty, who passed away here a few years ago, was also a brother.

Mr. Lichty came from the sturdy Pennsylvania stock of which Somerset County is especially famous and which has received such a large transplantation to Black Hawk county. He was a man of high ideals, honored in his community and loved by all who came into close personal contact with him. For more than fifty years he had been a faithful and devoted member of the Church of the Brethren. He had a large part in all movements which tended to improve and elevate the civic, educational and religious interests of his community.

Funeral services will be held from the Church of the Brethren, corner of Seventh and South Streets, at 2:30 tomorrow afternoon, conducted by Rev. A. P. Blough. Interment will be in the Orange Township Cemetery.

The family asks that no flowers be sent.

Among those to come to the funeral will be Allen Lichty of Morrill, Kansas.
