AT HUDSON

Funeral services for Capt. Gaylord Gutknecht, 34, foster son of Mrs. Elmer Gutknecht of Hudson, who died unexpectedly Thursday noon of a heart attack at his home in Maryville, Tennessee, will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Evangelical United Brethren Church at Hudson. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Waterloo.

The body will be taken to the church at noon Saturday from the Locke Funeral Home, Waterloo.

He was born and reared in Hudson.

Captain Gutknecht, who was a member of the Marine Corps Reserve, was stationed at Maryville, Tennessee, as a government helicopter pilot for the Atomic Energy Commission, engaged in transporting officials from Maryville to the atomic plant at Oak Ridge. He had been there about two years. Prior to that he had served in World War II and in the Korean War.

During the latter engagement he served as a U.S. Marine Corps transport pilot and took part in the evacuation of the wounded in the United Nations forces. He served about four and a half years in World War II.

He started as a Marine Corps infantryman in May, 1942, receiving pilot training at Pensacola, Florida. He became a bomber pilot with the grade of technical sergeant there. A year later he received his commission as second Lieutenant. He served overseas in the south Pacific, where he participated in two campaigns, including that in the Philippines.

He received numerous citations for his distinguished service. After his discharge from the service in 1948, he spent several years on the west coast. Later he owned and operated the Blue Goose Cafe in Hudson.

As a member of Fighter Squadron 113 Marine Corps Reserve, he was called to active duty and transferred to a Marine Corps Transport Squadron during the Korean War and was advanced to Captain. He was overseas about a week after being recalled to service.

He was born in Hudson on February 21, 1921. He was adopted by Elmer and Grace Gutknecht of Hudson.

He was graduated from Hudson High School. On February 8, 1953 he married Ruth Brennecke of Waterloo.

He was a member of the Evangelical United Brethren Church of Hudson.

Surviving are his wife and daughter Sheryl Lynn at Maryville, Tennessee; his foster mother, Mrs. Grace Gutknecht, Hudson; one sister, Mrs. Phyllis Beard, Hudson; two brothers, Preston Smith, 906 Bayard Street, Waterloo, and Hartley Smith, 917 West Fifth Street, Waterloo.
