INDEPENDENCE — Benjamin F. Colson, 85, of Independence, formerly of Cedar Falls, died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2012 at Buchanan County Health Center, Independence, of natural causes.

He was born Sept. 25, 1926, in Dunksburg, Mo., son of Jesse and Eula Mae Marshall Colson. He married Nadine R. Borgstadt on Dec. 21, 1947, at Sedalia, Mo. She died Dec. 28, 2009.

Mr. Colson was a supervisor at John Deere until 1982, then vice president at Ingersoll Cutting Tool Co. until 1992. Later he was the general manger at Hertel Cutting Technology, retiring in 1995. He served in the U.S. Marine Corp during World War II, receiving an Honorable Discharge. He was past chairman of the Society of Carbide Engineer and former member of the Society of Mechanical Engineers and the VFW.

Survived by four: daughters, Nancy (Rich) Evans of Reed Springs, Mo., Judy (Dave) Starling of Ames, Janet (Darrell) Starling of Independence and Jennifer (Rick) Sherman of Rockford, Ill.; 14 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Carl (Shirley) Colson of Sedalia, Mo.; and two sisters, Elizabeth Printz of Sydney, Neb., and Martha Heins of Hampton.

Preceded in death by two brothers, John and Lester.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday at Locke Funeral Home, Waterloo, where visitation begins at 9 a.m., with burial in Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by American Legion Post 138 and VFW Post 138.

Memorials in lieu of flowers may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice and the VFW.
